8 Raleigh Activities to End Your Summer on the Highest Note
By Parkcentral Admin - August 2, 2018
August is here, and soon we’ll be looking forward to fall activities and the holidays. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves – there are still plenty of fun things to do in the area before the back-to-school season gets into full swing. Make the most of what’s left of the summer with these can’t-miss Raleigh activities.
NC Japan Summer Festival
Spend a day exploring the music, dance, culture and food of Japan at the 13th Annual NC Japan Summer Festival. The festival will be held Aug. 4th at the Exposition Center of the NC State Fairgrounds. Watch martial artists show off their skills, shop the community market, join in tea ceremonies and take part in several other hands-on Raleigh activities. Make sure to grab an ice cold Japanese beer and sample traditional food including sushi, yakisoba and takoyaki.
Immerse yourself in Raleigh activities that celebrate the city’s creative and artistic side at First Friday on Aug. 3rd. During the free event, local art galleries, studios and museums keep their doors open late and invite you in to enjoy refreshments and browse their venues. Rock out at this month’s First Friday Jam with classic rock and pop hits by Heads Up Penny at Woody’s at City Market.
2018 TBS Blues Challenge
If you love the blues, head to the TBS Blues Challenge Aug. 5th at The Blue Note Grill to watch some of the most soulful bands in the area take the stage. The local competition is divided into two categories: solo/duo and band. Winners will have the chance to compete against the best blues bands from around the world in the 34th International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tennessee!
All White Attire Affair
Beat the heat and dress in your finest white for a night of dancing and good times! The Annual Allure 2018 All White Attire Affair takes place on Aug. 11th at the Sheraton Raleigh Hotel. Dance to your choice of DJ in one of the three large ballrooms. Open bar tickets are available to keep the drinks flowing and you dancing, all night long.
It’s Only A Play
Escape from the mundane for an evening of laughs with It’s Only A Play, presented by Theatre in the Park! The comedy pays homage to the world of show business and the people who make a living in it. You’ll be laughing from start to end as you watch the disastrous opening night party unfold on stage. The play is showing every weekend in August. Get there early to take a stroll in the beautiful gardens surrounding the theater!
Cheer On the Carolina Mudcats at Home
What’s summer without some baseball? Root for the home team as the Carolina Mudcats defend their turf At Five County Stadium in Zebulon. The Mudcats have several home games each week in August. Grab a hot dog and a beer and get ready to join in America’s favorite pastime.
Go Ape at Blue Jay Point County Park
One of the best Raleigh activities for enjoying the great outdoors is ziplining at Go Ape. The treetop adventure course runs through Blue Jay Point County Park. It will challenge your strength, agility and courage while taking you on an exhilarating ride. The zip lines get progressively higher and longer and provide breathtaking views of the park.
Escape the Heat and See a Cheap (or Free) Movie
When the summer heat’s just too hot to handle, you’re in luck because plenty of local theaters and museums offer a sweet air-conditioned reprieve – and cheap movies too! Stadium 14 in North Hills offers dollar movie nights on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The Raleigh Grand offers a summer movie series featuring 10 weeks of PG-rated movies for only a dollar on Mondays and Tuesdays. If you’re a member of the NC Museums of Art, take advantage of free admission to the Summer Movie Series to see a film under the stars!
